The Lake Hotel is one of the most historic structures in Yellowstone National Park and was added to the National Historical Register in 1991. It has been in operation since the time of its completed construction in 1903. The designer of the hotel was the famous architect, Robert Reamer, the same architect that designed the Old Faithful Inn.

The hotel has that early 20th century charm from the bell hop reception area, to the large sunroom overlooking the lake (complete with grand piano for evening entertainment), to the long elegant carpeted hallways, to its posh rooms.

Located in the Lake Village area, there is lots to see and do in and around the hotel: The Marina is just a short ride to the south where the lake cruise embarks/debarks. The lake lodge area has a great ice cream parlor with small grocery store, along with a moderately priced cafeteria with some good home-cooked food (i.e. more than the typical fast food fare). It’s also an easy drive out to the fishing bridge area to look for moose and other wildlife in the evening.

There is a tour that you can take from the hotel in vintage-styled long yellow tour vehicles (pictured above). We saw these throughout the day and all over the loops(s). It’s a nice convenience in that they arrive and depart right there from the hotel itself.

Once you come back to the lodge, plan to spend some time relaxing in the sunroom area of the hotel. You can enjoy a drink and listen to evening entertainment from a string quartet to a pianist. We sat on the couch, wrote out post cards, and exchanged stories with our fellow travellers. As simple as this sounds…it was one of our trip highlights.

There’s a small breakfast counter for your morning coffee, fruit, and pastry or you can enjoy a sitdown meal in the Lake Hotel’s restaurant.

For our family, it was up early and out the door…so a cup of coffee for Mom & Dad, and some cereal in the car for the kids and we we were all set!

The Lake Hotel has all the elegance and class of a 5-star hotel, with the turn-of-the-century charm and outdoor theme you’d come to expect from being in Yellowstone. The lake views are phenomenal and worth the stay here in and of themselves.

We’d definitely stay here again on our next time through!
